In 2021, 420 Development and 420 Race will be taught as a joint afternoon Race Program at the Jetties Sailing Center. Sailors, who are placed in either level by the Program Directors are invited to participate. Our afternoon 420 race program/team is designed to cover more technical concepts in the double-handed dinghy including upwind, downwind and reaching tactical strategies; proficient roll tacking and gybing; proficient spinnaker and trapeze work; advanced boat handling; acceleration techniques; and an introduction to team racing. Previous sailing instruction at NCS is a prerequisite unless by permission of the Program Director. The afternoon race program is considered a team and class is conducted in a way that emphasizes team participation and coherence, and all team-members are encouraged to participate on the team for as many weeks as possible, with a minimum required commitment of two weeks. The afternoon 420 Race Program will meet Monday - Friday afternoons from 1:15 PM - 4:45 PM. On Wednesday afternoons, students will compete in the All-island Race Day alongside 420 Racers from the Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club. Other on-island events include team races and Nantucket Race Week in August, which the 420 Race program team members are encouraged to participate in. While our afternoon 420 Race Team is generally a travel team, competing in a number of off-island regattas around southern Massachusetts, in 2021, we are not planning for off-island travel. This will be an on-island program only.
