About This Activity
Description
We're sorry, but this class/activity is over. The last meeting was Saturday, November 16, 2024.
At the Y, our youth basketball league helps 10 to 12 year olds develop fundamental basketball skills while teaching teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Skills taught include passing, shooting, dribbling, and the rules of the game. The focus of our youth basketball leagues is to have fun, meet new friends, and play in a hybrid recreational-competitive environment.
***ALL TIMES AND DAYS SUBJECT TO CHANGE BASED ON REGISTRATION NUMBERS AND NUMBER OF COACHES AND THEIR AVAILABILITY***
Prerequisites:
We require all players to attend a skills development clinic and assessment prior to being placed on a team.
What Do I Need:
Please have your child wear athletic clothes and closed-toe shoes. You should also have them bring a water bottle and a basketball for your child to use during practice. Please clearly label all items you send with your child.
Spectators should bring a chair to use when watching the games or practices. Please do not bring food into the gym, and all liquids should be in a bottle that has a secure cap and seal.
Volunteer Opportunities:
YMCA sports are based on seven guiding principles: everyone plays, safety first, fair play, positive competition, sports for all, sports for fun, and family involvement. Our leagues are supported by parent volunteers who are engaged as coaches, referees, and fans.
If you are interested in being a volunteer this season, please contact Jayde Doucette at Jdoucette@suncoastymca.org. There is also an area for you to indicate your volunteer interest when you are registering your child.
Parent Communication:
All notifications will be done using the email address that you have on file. If you are not sure which email address is on file, please contact us to verify or update your contact information.
Special Requests:
Our priorities are creating a playing environment that allows players to be on balanced and fair teams, placing your child on a team that practices on one of your requested evenings, and helping our parent volunteers have equal access to resources needed to help players grow in skills and have a fun season.
Coaches: We appreciate our volunteer coaches and recognize that you may have a coach that your child has previously played with during a prior season. Team assignments will be made based upon a player's skill assessment. We are unable to allow requests or pairings with a specific coach, and expect players to participate in this league to learn sportsmanship and have an enjoyable experience, regardless of the volunteer coach that they are placed with.
Friends: We understand that playing sports with friends can make the experience more enjoyable, however we want each parent to encourage their child to view their team placement with an open mind. If they are lucky and placed on a team with another player that they already know then that is fantastic! However, we are not able to accommodate requests. Please help them see this as an opportunity for them to get to meet new players. Cooperating with new teammates is a great growing experience for them and remind them that they will still be able to see their friends outside of basketball.
