Accelerated Geometry offers students the opportunity to learn the same material taught in O’Dowd’s full-year Geometry course but in six weeks in June and July. Classes are four hours long, Monday through Friday, and each covers at least the same amount of material as one week’s worth of the full-year class. Students work in small groups on online problem sets and lectures are kept to a minimum allowing the students to learn via discussion and the teacher to offer only hints when needed. Several related and fun projects are done each week as well. Although the four hours of hard work are intense and challenging, there is little homework other than to prepare for unit tests given at the end of each week. As this is a fast-paced class, students may not miss more than one class and must get permission ahead of time to miss any portion of any class. Geometry is the ideal course to bridge during the summer since success in higher level math classes does not depend on a thorough understanding of geometry. Also, it allows students to take Algebra 2 three months after taking Algebra 1 rather than a whole year after taking Algebra 1. A placement test will be given to students the last week of class to determine placement for the fall semester. Enrollment is eligibility-based and requires the approval of the Math Department chair. This class meets four hours a day and earns 10 academic credits. This class is U.C. eligible for a year-long geometry course. Students have one week to drop the course for a partial (50%) refund and two weeks to drop the course with no refund (course grade will be reflected on students transcripts).
