Starfish Swimming Lessons (3–12-year-olds)
Swim School and Stroke School
New! Attendance Policy Anyone missing the first day of class, must email the facilities’ Pool Manager prior to the start of the class in order to not be automatically dropped from the class session. Saturday, before the first day of lessons, participants will receive a reminder email with the date and time of the upcoming swim lessons, attendance policy and the email address of the Pool Manager. When the first day of class is missed without prior written notification, the next person on the waitlist will be notified of the open spot.
The City of Phoenix has a streamlined, swim lesson registration process for Starfish Swim Lessons. You will simply select the session dates and time you would like to attend, and our talented team will do the rest! On the first day of lessons, certified Swim Lesson Instructors will perform swim testing on each participant; assessing swimming abilities based on the Starfish Swimming Lessons Benchmarks (see below). Your child will then be placed in the appropriate class, with similarly skilled children.
Class ratios will be 1 instructor to no more than 6 children.
Starfish Swim School Benchmarks for completion of level
- White Star Benchmark 1: Easily can submerge entire face and body
- Red Star Benchmark 2: Independent floating on front and back. Can roll onto back and float to breathe.
- Yellow Star Benchmark 3: Self rescue by performing the swim, roll, swim method.
- Blue Star Benchmark 4: Streamline on back with face out of the water and forward movement with good side breathing body position and proper flutter kick
- Green Star Benchmark 5: Can perform front stroke with 1,2,3 arm stroke and side breathing pattern, over arm action and strong flutter kick
- White Star Benchmark 6: Freestyle and Backstroke
- Red Star Benchmark 7: Elementary Backstroke and Side Stroke
- Yellow Star Benchmark 8: Butterfly
- Blue Star Benchmark 9: Breaststroke
