About This Activity

"Behind every great daysail or fishing trip is an engine that needs to run smoothly, and knowing how to keep it spinning is the ultimate superpower on the water. In this action-packed, week-long summer program, youth will get their hands greasy learning what makes boats move. We’ll demystify everything from portable two-stroke and four-stroke outboard motors to the rugged inboard diesel engines that power cruising sailboats and workboats. Students will dive deep into the core systems of marine propulsion, learning exactly how fuel, air, sparks, and cooling water work together to generate power. Through fun, interactive challenges, our young crew will master routine maintenance like changing oil and water pump impellers and learn how to systematically troubleshoot common “won’t start” issues. By tackling real mechanical problems in a supportive team environment, participants will build critical thinking skills and self-reliance. Your youngster will wrap up the week with a solid mechanical foundation, a massive boost in problem-solving confidence, and the practical skills to help keep the family boat or a friend’s skiff running safely.
