About This Activity
Description
Have you thought about becoming a Prairie Village lifeguard but you're not 15 yet? Come test out the waters. The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguard program introduces youth ages 11-14 to the skills used to become a future lifeguard. This two week course includes developing in-water rescues, and an introduction to first aid, CPR, and AEDs. It's a great opportunity to hone your swimming and leadership skills in a fun and social environment.Prerequisites (which will be completed on day 1):
- Swim 25 yards front crawl while breathing to the front or side
- Swim 25 yards breaststroke while using a pull, breathe, kick, and glide sequence
- Complete the water competency sequence, which includes:
--Step into the water from the side and totally submerge
--Maintain position for 1 minute by treading water or floating (or a combination of the two)
--Rotate 1 full turn and orient to the exit
--Level off and swim on the front or back 25 yards
--Exit without using a ladder or steps
What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, goggles, and water bottle
Please note:
- While participants will receive a certificate if they successfully complete the course, it does not certify them as a lifeguard.
- A minimum of 4 participants must register or the class will be cancelled.
