About This Activity
Students in this class should weigh about 100 pounds and will learn advanced race theory and work towards advanced level regattas in the Laser and 420 fleets. We teach advanced boat mechanics and handling to students and beginner team racing. Students in this course must come for two weeks, although attending all summer is common. They will practice and act as a team, possibly holding fundraisers and encouraging their teammates to succeed.
Regatta schedules post in early April, and all students in the class will attend regattas during the week. Not only will all students attend the regatta, but no instruction will take place at MRYC during the regatta. The class fees include coaching at the regatta.
The daily schedule will likely change each day. Traveling to regattas may mean prepping trailers in the evening, early morning rendezvous, and meal stops on the way home. Coaches will communicate plans for regattas and traveling. Instruction occurs at the Club when regattas are not the day's activity.
An important part of being a racing sailor is organizing and packing your gear to get to a regatta, rigging, and racing, and then reversing the process to go home. Parents play an active role in transporting boats and students. Parent regatta coordinators will help with details.
