Nature LAW: Introducing three new programs LAND, AIR, and WATER offered by the San Diego River Park Foundation. This activity will be held at Robb Athletic Field. Meeting place will be Jim Howard Hall.

Natural LAW is based on close observation of nature to provide a gateway to discover the natural world. Science starts with a question. The answer is the process of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation. During the field trip to the San Diego River, students will experience nature, contribute to community science, and use observation-based learning to foster an appreciation for the riparian ecosystem all while enjoying the great outdoors. Your students will observe and identify the native flora and fauna surrounding the San Diego River riparian ecosystem using hands-on investigation to encourage understanding and inspire wonder. This is a great opportunity to align with NGSS Standards while providing an environmental education experience in your own backyard – the San Diego River.
LAND Field Trip Students will learn about native and invasive plant species, how to identify plant structure, systems and which plants were important to the Kumeyaay People. They will also learn how to detect mammals, amphibians, and reptiles by the clues they leave behind. Create animal scat that can be used to nurture native nature.
AIR Field Trip Learn how to identify the myriad of bird species that either visit San Diego or call the estuary home. Learn why birds are an important part of the ecosystem and how to identify what they eat by their wings, beaks, and feet. Examine an owl’s left-overs to discover who came to dinner and why birds are so important.
WATER Field Trip Students learn about the San Diego River Watershed and how that river impacts our region and the Pacific Ocean. Using the same tools as professional ecologists, students examine the small invertebrates that live in the water to determine the pollution levels and health of the San Diego River. Students discuss the impact of environment changes and humans have on the health of the river and discover the merits of possible solutions to keeping our environment healthy.
