About This Activity

Fall Recess Camp As the seasons shift, the inhabitants of San Francisco—humans and animals alike—begin preparing for the cooler months ahead. At Tree Frog Treks, we know that even in temperate Central California, a trained naturalist can spot the subtle changes of fall: animals foraging and storing food, leaves changing color, and shifting weather patterns that bring new discoveries. Join our experienced Wild Science team this autumn as we explore how the natural world transforms with the season! Our Holly Park Fall Camp is a mobile adventure, with campers trekking from our home base to explore nearby gems like Bernal Heights, St. Mary’s, Glen Canyon, Alemany Farm, Dolores Park, the Presidio, and more. Along the way, they'll learn about the flora and fauna that call San Francisco home—from soaring Red-tailed Hawks to camouflaged Slender Salamanders. Each day kicks off with a “mind map,” a fun and energetic group gathering to spark curiosity and introduce the day's theme. Campers then head out on foot or travel via “BMW” (Bus, Muni, Walk), walking up to 1–5 miles a day as they adventure across the city. Through team-building games, hands-on science experiments, nature-based art projects, and encounters with our amazing Animal Ambassadors—like Thorny the Bearded Dragon or Blondie the Burmese Python—campers will deepen their connection to the wild world around them. At the end of the day, you’ll find your camper back at their group site, supervised by our naturalists and often playing in nearby playgrounds or climbing trees. Be sure to check out with your Naturalist and hear all about what they discovered! Fall is the perfect time to get outside and get dirty—so put on your explorer hat, grab your binoculars and bug nets, and let’s hit the trail for some science fun!
