About This Activity
Do you have a student who loves to argue or excels at persuading others? Do you have a budding thespian that is ready for a more challenging role? Perhaps a shy student needing to polish their public speaking skills in a fun, low-key environment? This course is perfect for both! Inspired by the intrigue of Law and Order, this Mock Trial course will ignite their passion for the legal world. Students in this class will dive into the foundations of the criminal and civil court systems. On day one, they will receive a case booklet containing all the pertinent details about a fictional case they will argue for or against, including witness statements, pre-trial stipulations, exhibits, and more. Those that choose to focus more on speech and acting will be given one to two scripts which they will prepare. These include expert witnesses such as investigators, eye witnesses and more. Think Law and Order meets the classroom. Throughout the course, students will learn invaluable teamwork and leadership skills as they navigate an actual case. They will develop arguments for both the prosecution and defense, prepare witnesses, and act as pre-trial attorneys. Students will work together and develop direct and cross-examination scripts for their witnesses. By the end of the course, students will have crafted a strong, comprehensive, and well-developed case. This class isn’t just about public speaking; it’s designed for students who are truly excited about the legal world and eager to dive deep into trial advocacy or learn more to hone their acting abilities. They will experience the thrill of courtroom dynamics and develop skills that go beyond the classroom, fostering a lifelong interest in law.
