The Sail Sand Point Opti team is intended for sailors who have already completed several sailing classes or camps, and want to learn advanced sailing skills and start to race in a friendly and supportive environment. The Optimist is a small single-handed pram that is the most widespread youth dinghy in the world, and is a great boat for beginning sailors all the way up to expert racers maxing out at 110 pounds. The SSP summer Opti team is structured around the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit, which consists of 5 major regattas beginning in June and finishing in early September. Please see the NWYRC website for the regatta schedule. Sailors will learn how to start racing in a single-handed dinghy, including skills such as rigging for specific wind conditions, roll tacks and gybes, how to start properly, mark-roundings, basic race strategy, and having fun! Sailors are expected to attend two practices each week as well as at least two regattas throughout the summer. Please contact the SSP Head Coach (alec@sailsandpoint.org) for more details.
