This class is for sailors interested in racing, who are comfortable with rigging a boat, righting a capsized boat, and sailing in moderate wind conditions without detailed instruction. Sailors have mastered the basic skills and would like to learn racing rules and tactics. Instructors are experienced racers and are trained to maximize fun, safety, and competitive etiquette. One race clinic is required for those participating in the race weeks. Instruction for intermediate and advanced sailors is in Optimist (Opti) and Flying Junior (FJ) sailboats. • Optis are 8’ prams with one sail designed to be sailed by one person up to 120 pounds. Most kids under 11 years old or under 100 pounds should sail an Opti. • FJs are 14' dinghies with three sails: a main sail, a jib, and spinnaker. They are sailed with two sailors. Sailors over 120 pounds or over 13 years of age will likely sail FJs.
