Sailors will have the option of participating in the two-day regatta on Saratoga Lake on Thursday and Friday. This class is open for all levels of sailors that know how to swim. Students will be divided into groups based on their sailing experience and age. Instructors are trained to maximize fun and learning. The class uses two types of sailboats, Optimist (Opti) and Flying Junior (FJ) sailboats. • Optis are 8’ prams with one sail designed to be sailed by one person up to 120 pounds. Most kids under 11 years old or under 100 pounds should sail an Opti. • FJs are 14' dinghies with three sails: a main sail, a jib, and spinnaker. They are sailed with two sailors. Sailors over 120 pounds or over 13 years of age will likely sail FJs. Beginner sailors will learn the basics of sailing and safety on the water while having fun. Intermediate sailors should be familiar with the basics of rigging a boat and righting a capsized boat, and are comfortable sailing in light to moderate wind conditions with some instruction. Intermediate sailors will have the basic skills and would like to improve their boat handling and increase their experience. Many intermediate sailors participate in race training and regattas. Sailors without previous regatta experience are required to enroll in the Two Week Advanced Race Program to participate in the Cheeseburger Regatta, July 30-31 ( Lake George). All sailors enrolled in an Advanced Race Program are encouraged to participate in the weekly Thursday night LCYC dinghy races. These are a fun, supportive and non-scored activity to help improve the junior sailor’s racing experience. The cost is included in the fee for the Advanced Race Program. A junior sailing instructor will be present for coaching during the Thursday night races
