This class is for sailors who have completed one or more beginner sessions, are familiar with the basics of rigging a boat and righting a capsized boat, and are comfortable sailing in light to moderate wind conditions with some instruction. Intermediate sailors are those familiar with the basic skills and would like to improve their boat handling and increase their experience. Instructors are trained to maximize fun, safety, and boating etiquette. Many intermediate sailors participate in race training and regattas. Instruction for intermediate sailors is in Optimist (Opti) and Flying Junior (FJ) sailboats. • Optis are 8’ prams with one sail designed to be sailed by one person up to 120 pounds. Most kids under 11 years old or under 100 pounds should sail an Opti. • FJs are 14' dinghies with three sails: a main sail, a jib, and spinnaker. They are sailed with two sailors. Sailors over 120 pounds or over 13 years of age will likely sail FJs.
