About This Activity
In this class, youth sailors learn the basic skills to sail a small boat independently. Students are taught the parts of a sailboat, the points of sail, capsize recovery, and basic knot tying. This class is meant for those new to sailing as well as those furthering their skills at an advanced-beginner or intermediate level. Students are divided based on skill level, and instruction is tailored to that level, to ensure that students stay engaged and continue their skill development. Students sail a one-person boat, the Optimist Pram (Opti) or the Sailcube, which provides the quickest learning curve. Most students remain in this class for two to three sessions, in order to learn the skills required to move on to sailing the 420 (the larger, two-person boat) or into the racing class. All beginners under the age of fourteen and under 125 pounds will begin in this class. Prerequisite(s): 8 - 14 years old, swim one length of pool This class is offered: four-day, one-week format or twice-a-week, three-week format
