About This Activity

Join a NESS educator as we read and discuss the book “The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness” by Sy Montgomery. Explore themes in the book surrounding animal intelligence, fishery management, and the health of the ocean environment. Investigate other types of mollusks, including squid, clams, and snails, through dissections and observation of live animals. A culminating event will be held at the Mystic Aquarium to get a behind-the-scenes tour and discuss the importance of aquariums in conservation. After reading this book, you’ll never think about octopuses the same way. (Yes, this is an appropriate way to pluralize the word octopus)! The cost of the program includes a copy of the book for you to keep. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Explore the unique life of mollusks, especially the octopus 2. Investigate themes surrounding animal intelligence 3. Interview professionals in animal care and their important role in animal conservation
