History of Theater is a literature and writing class which follows the chronological history of the theater. We start with Greek and Roman theater and then continue through the major historical periods of theater, studying how each time period’s drama reflected (and challenged) the social, religious and political values of that era. Among others, we will study the works of Sophocles, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and Arthur Miller and end the year learning about the American Musical. This class incorporates several reading and writing assignments, as well as some passage memorization. While this class would be fun for any student, it will be especially so for a student who loves drama! For a high school student, this class should count as a literature and/or writing credit. Many of the texts we will use are available for free online, especially the ones used early in the year. I will provide a list of any other texts needed prior to the start of the school year.
