This course is designed to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of stroke mechanics, safe class fundamentals, and how to use Red Cross materials to facilitate active and fun learning in a learn-to-swim lesson program. Participants who successfully complete this course, both the online and in-person components, will receive their American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, valid for two years. All class dates are mandatory, and students should be prepared to swim each day.Pre-requisite skills include a 25-yard swim using freestyle, 25-yards of backstroke, 15-yards of butterfly, 15-yards of floating/sculling on back, and treading water for 1 minute.
Students enrolled in this activity must complete an online module before the first day of in-person sessions. A link will be emailed to the participant email address provided during the registration process approximately two weeks prior to the first meeting date. Students who do not complete the online portion before in-person sessions begin will be turned away.

If participants are seeking employment with the City of Mesa Aquatics division, a valid lifeguard certificate is also required.
