Just because the days are shorter and the temperature is dropping doesn't mean it's time to retreat inside. During the fall, the world becomes a playground of fun. There are leaves for jumping in, apples for picking and pumpkins for carving. Fall is definitely not the time to hibernate.
Here are 12 of my favorite fall activities for families to enjoy.
Leaf Peeping
1 of 13Take a family walk on a nature trail to see all the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows up close and personal.
Jump in a Pile of Leaves
2 of 13As an adult, raking leaves ranks as one of my least favorite things to do. Have some fun with it as a family. Rake up a pile of leaves strictly for jumping in. Now that's fun!
Pick Apples at a Local Orchard
3 of 13There's nothing better than a freshly picked apple. Enjoy it straight off the tree or make an apple pie, apple crisp, apple cider or applesauce with your picks.
Go for a Tractor or Hay Ride
4 of 13This time of year is popular for outdoor festivals and events at farms. There's bound to be a hay ride near you!
Plan Your Halloween Costume
5 of 13Get started on your Halloween plans to avoid the last-minute scramble for a costume. Maybe this is the year you make a totally unique, homemade costume.
Find the Perfect Pumpkin
6 of 13Head to the local farm to search for the perfect pumpkin. Once you get home, decorate it however you'd like. Hot pink pumpkin anyone?
Collect Leaves
7 of 13Make a leaf identification album with your collection to help your kids learn more about nature.
Have a Backyard Campfire
8 of 13If you have a fire pit or access to one, let the kids roast everything from veggies to s'mores.
Play Football
9 of 13Get the whole family together for a game of football before everyone goes comatose in front of the TV watching the game on Sunday afternoon.
Make a Big Pot of Chili
10 of 13After a full day of being active in the crisp air, your belly will want something warm. Chili is the way to go for warmth from the inside out.
Have a Picnic
11 of 13Who says summer is the only time for picnics? Pack a blanket and a basket of belly-warming foods to enjoy outside.
Pick Acorns
12 of 13Decorate your collection with paint or make an acorn family that resembles your own.
