A Fishing Net

Most ponds are filled with minnows and fish. A handheld net is a great way to catch fish that are close to shore without needing a rod and bait. It's also a great way to get kids active by walking around, searching for and catching fish. You don't have to go in very far, and it makes for a fun game of catch and release.
A Pail

Rocks, sticks, mud, feathers; there's a lot to be found at a pond without even needing to go in the water. This is a great kinesthetic learning technique for toddlers and kids as they can walk around collecting what they find.
A Shovel

Digging is a lot of fun for kids. They love to get down and dirty. Whether it's making a castle, digging a hole or searching for buried treasure, having a shovel on hand at any trip to the pond is a must.
Bread

Many ponds have friendly residents in the form of ducks and birds. Bring a loaf of bread and let the kids enjoy feeding them. You can even play little games, such as counting how many ducks you see and feed.
Snacks or Lunch

After all that fishing, shoveling and duck feeding, you'll be sure to work up an appetite. Make sure you have plenty of snacks on hand for you and the kids. A picnic lunch is always a great way to end a great trip to the pond -- just make sure the ducks know which food is for you and which is for them.
