6 Tips for Hiking With Kids

4. Be Ready for Questions

Hiking with kids is part hike, part science lesson. Children are curious and want to know about each and every plant, tree and bird you pass by. Be prepared for their questions, and let their curiosity rub off on you. Hikes are much more fun when you're constantly exploring, on and off the trail.

5. Start Close to Home

You won't always make it to the top of the mountain when hiking with kids. At any given moment your child may be too tired, sick of hiking, hurt from falling, or just plain uninterested. Hiking close to home is your best bet for the first few treks. Traveling multiple hours, just to turn around, is not only a waste of gas, but time, too.

If you've successfully completed all or most of the hikes close to home, you can venture further out.

6. Pick a Hiking Leader

The key to a successful hike with kids is ensuring they're involved  from start to finish. Make your child the group's hiking leader to keep them interested and excited. Change the leader role every few minutes if there's more than one child. Don't forget to give them a compass, so they can "lead the way."

Hiking with kids is a different experience, and one that can be rewarding for everyone involved. If you're taking your child hiking, be sure to consider these six tips. With gear, snacks and ample curiosity, you're sure to have an exciting hike.
