1. Pack the Essentials
Most experienced hikers can finish a trek even when they've left an important item behind. That's not the case when you're hiking with children. The difference between finishing the hike and turning back can hinge on having all the kid essentials with you. Don't forget these seven must-have items:
- Sunscreen
- Food and water
- First-aid kit
- Rain gear
- Hats
- Bug spray
- Extra clothes

2. Always Remember Snacks
Not only do growing kids need more fuel for a hiking trip than adults, but it's great motivation to keep them moving up the mountain. Bring easy-to-carry-and-eat snacks like trail mix, nuts, dry cereal and granola bars. If possible, let them carry their own snacks in their backpack.
3. Get the Gear
You don't want your kids to be uncomfortable or unsafe, so it's important they have the right gear, most importantly hiking boots. Be sure to buy a pair with good grip so they can hike safely and successfully up the mountain, regardless of terrain.
Other gear to remember: jacket, hat, walking stick and compass.
