The Facts About Exercise and Breastfeeding

Is it okay to exercise while breastfeeding? The answer is simple—yes.

As a matter of fact there is little to no research to support that exercise is anything but beneficial for a breastfeeding mother. This being said, there are a few things a mother needs to keep in mind when beginning her exercise program.

It's important to take it easy during your recovery period. Typically six weeks after birth, as recommended by most physicians, before beginning any type of exercise program. Once your doctor puts you in the clear, its go time.

Begin your program slowly and listen to your body. Don't over do it and pace yourself. Keep in mind, it took 40 weeks to get your body to its state of giving birth and it may take some time to reach your goals.

If you notice any pain, discomfort or perhaps clogged ducts, it is a signal to slow down and take it easy.

Hydration is key. Be sure to drink before, during and after working out to replace any lost fluids.

The only change your baby may notice is a salty taste due to the sweat on your breasts. This issue can be easily resolved by showering or washing off your breasts prior to feeding. Otherwise there should be no issues between nursing and working your exercise program, which is great news.

You may find it helps to nurse right before you exercise, it can to be more comfortable than if your breasts are full. This can also help combat the salty taste from sweat. It's also a good idea to pick up a comfortable and supportive sports bra. This will help to support your enlarged breasts while running, jumping or moving around.

In short, exercising while breastfeeding is just fine. They compliment each other nicely and will help you to reach your goals of becoming a healthier you. Have fun with it, connect with other moms and enjoy your workout.
