Level 1 Water CompetencyAges: 6 to 16
Prerequisites: None
Note: The City of San Diego has made a curriculum and name change to the Level 1 course which will now be referred to as Level 1 Water Competency. The goal of the new Level 1 Water Competency course is to make a safer swimmer. The course will focus on safety skills that students will be able to use in the event of a life-threatening aquatic emergency. To pass the Level 1 Water Competency course students will have to complete the following sequence:
1. Jump into deep water and recovers at the surface
2. Treads or floats for 60 seconds 3. Spin around 360 degrees to orient to their exit 4. Swim 25 yards (at least half front crawl) with rhythmic breathing
5. Climb out of the pool
All students who feel confident in their ability to pass the Water Competency Sequence must be assessed by pool staff prior to registering for the course. Staff will advise participants who get assessed as to which level they best belong in.
