About This Activity
Description
The Junior Lifeguard program is designed to teach future lifeguards (ages 9 through 15) the skills and responsibilities required of a lifeguard. Our goal is to provide participants with a fun training environment to eventually become a beach and/or pool lifeguard.
Junior lifeguards should be proficient swimmers with a strong background. Participants will be asked to swim, tread water, submerge, and work as a team. This program is not a lifeguard certifying course.
The program will teach water safety, beck safety, proper use of rescue equipment, rescue, and lifesaving techniques. We'll also play fun games on land and in the water that include running and swimming races. Activities each week are adjusted based on the weather. Certified USA Swimming Coaches and American Red Cross Lifeguards with both pool and beach experience will run the training.
Junior lifeguards will be organized on the first day after a swimming assessment. The first day of camp also includes name introductions and a safety meeting. Children should arrive with their swimsuit on. Water shoes are highly recommended due to the nature of the beach.
Junior lifeguarding will be held on Saturdays at the Smithtown Landing Pool for the first 3 Saturdays and at Otto Schubert Beach on Long Beach Road, Nissequogue for the last Saturday. No session on 7/4. Any Rainouts will be moved to Sunday.
