U8 – FUNdamentals Physical – Develop the ABC’s of movement (physical literacy): agility, balance, co-ordination, speed, as well as running, jumping, turning, striking the ball, throwing and catching. Technical – Movement exercises/games designed to promote a feel for the ball: developing ball control to receive passes, dribbling past players, passing less than 25m, passing the ball forward, and shooting on goal. Tactical – At this age children are egocentric – playing with the ‘their’ ball is the most important objective. The objective in this age group is to encourage co-operation between teammates. The players will gain understanding of the game through experience of playing situations which requires them to make decisions. Players can be encouraged to have a team shape of a diamond with the four outfield players. GK-1-2-1. A big diamond when the team has possession and small diamond when the team does not have the ball. Mental – Basic awareness of environment to build game intelligence and decision making. Players should be allowed to make decisions and discover for themselves if they made the right choice. Coaches should ask players 50/50 questions to encourage players to ‘think’. E.g. When we lose the ball, should you help win the ball back or stay up front and wait for the ball.
