On average, Americans report they gain between 7 to 10 pounds over the holidays. With the holiday season now kicking off as early as Halloween, the three-month period of October, November and December are full of parties, gatherings, cookie swaps and other food-centered activities. It's a wonder the average isn't higher.

I don't think it's right to say that you shouldn't enjoy the good food of the season. If it's something that you only get once a year, enjoy. However, there are plenty delicious, healthier alternatives to the sugar and fat (bad fat, that is) laden cookies and desserts that are usually served. Just because it's labeled "healthier" doesn't mean it's lackluster in flavor.
