4 Hockey Drills to Make Your Kid a Sharpshooter

Give and Go

This drill will create a situation where players are receiving passes, making quick and decisive one-on-one moves to create space and then shooting on net from an angle (to the left or right of the net).

Have a group of players form a line just outside the blue line close to the boards (on the left or right). The coach will stand close the corner of the offensive zone straight across from the players. Place a turned-over net in the center of the faceoff circle. The exercise begins as the first player in line passes to the coach and then skates toward the net. The coach quickly passes back to the oncoming player, who then receives the pass back and makes a quick move around the turned-over net (to the left or right) and fires a shot on goal.

3 Vs. 0

This drill, which would effectively work as a warm-up exercise, will see three players rotate in the offensive zone to create two different shooting opportunities.

Three players will form a triangle close to the blue line on the left or right side of the offensive zone. The first player will begin roughly halfway inside the zone, close to the boards. The second player will begin along the boards just inside the blue line. The third player will begin straightaway from the net just inside the blue line. The drill begins when the first player passes to the second player, and the second player then passes to the third player. The third player fires a point shot on net. The first player then collects a second puck from his or her starting position and attacks the net and fires a shot from closer to the net. After all three players complete the drill, they rotate to different spots within the triangle to perform different responsibilities.
