Every week there's a cookie swap, party or family gathering during the holidays. A big focus during these gatherings is the food. We look forward to enjoying all of the scrumptious foods that put us in the festive mood.
But with those festivities also comes extra stress, a reduction in activity time and letting our healthy eating habits slide. There's more to the holidays than eating. This year, try starting a new family tradition with an activity to get the family moving and build lifelong memories.
Take a Neighborhood Decorations Tour
1 of 6Try a family walk around the neighborhood to look at the Christmas decorations instead of driving. It's a great way to get extra steps in for the day and to break out of the food coma after a heavy meal.
Family Fun Run
2 of 6Pick a holiday-themed run for the family to participate in. There are tons of Turkey Trots on Thanksgiving and you'll be sure to find many holiday-themed runs that donate to charities in December. Have fun with it by dressing in Santa hats or wearing jingle bells.
Host a Sledding or Skating Party
3 of 6If you live in a cold climate, take the gathering outside to a sledding hill or skating rink. It's a fun way to get active and connect with friends.
Family Football
4 of 6When half time of the big game of the week rolls around, round up the family for a quick game of touch football in the backyard. You'll still get to watch the game and get a little activity in, too.
Give Active Presents
5 of 6One sure way to get the family moving during the holidays is to buy active presents. For kids, think of bikes, balls, hula hoops, sleds, skates, etc. The kids will want to test out their new gear as soon as possible. Don't let the kids have all the fun, though. Get out there and play, too.
