Look over there! Is that a Toucan hovering over the Gulf?? No, it’s a Black Skimmer – the bird with an oddity of a beak. Black Skimmers have brilliantly colored bills that have a longer bottom half, specialized for in-flight skimming on the water - magnificent multitaskers! Once that lower jaw feels the tickle of a fish during a skim - SNAP! It closes shut and the Skimmer has scooped up some fast food. We can’t wait to get out and do some bird watching with you this week and try to spot the Skimmer. We will scoop up some fish on our own and skim the water on surfboards. Grab your binoculars, your spotting scopes, and your best bird ID book, we’re going on a birding bonanza!
