Basketball Drills to Make Your Kid a Lockdown Defender

1-2-3

Have a group of players collect on one end of the court, and begin the drill by instructing a single offensive player and defensive player to step forward. The offensive player will start dribbling toward the other end of the court while moving in a zigzag fashion. The defensive player will work on sliding and keeping the offensive player in front of them while utilizing good defensive posture and footwork. The defensive player is not allowed to steal the ball at this time.

As soon as the dribbler crosses half-court, the drill is live and the offensive player tries to score while the defensive player works to stop them.

The coach will then begin to add additional players into the drill. Each rotation will continue to begin with a ball-handler dribbling towards half court. As soon as the ball crosses half-court, the participating players finish the drill with a basket or a defensive stop.

Numbers Scrimmage

First, divide into two even teams and ask each team member to number off. Have each team line up along the baseline in order, and have the coach stand in between the first two players in line.

The drill begins when the coach tosses a ball out on the floor and calls out random numbers. The correctly numbered players from each team race out onto the floor, and the player that successfully retrieves the ball becomes the offensive player while the player that is beaten to the ball becomes the defensive player. The two players then compete until the offensive player scores or the defensive player gains possession of the ball. The coach should mix up the numbers as well as the number of players selected to create different situations.

Points are only given for baskets, and the coach should keep track of the points for both teams and play to a specific number.
